SMOKE RUN, PA - Joey
Vancas lost his second business in four years to fire, when
a blaze erupted on Dec. 1, 2004 at 6:22 p.m. in this small
Clearfield County community.
Moon's Inn had four
people on the second floor when the blaze broke out, but
they all escaped uninjured. The three-alarm blaze saw 13
fire companies from three counties battle the flames for
nearly 7 hours. There were no injuries.
Water was a major
problem, and Madera Fire Chief Dwayne Delattre was not
pleased that engines could not draft from an area stream.
Irvona Fire Co. gave it
a try and was the only engine able to draft from the stream
and firefighters finally had water, about a mile from the
scene Irvona was pushing the water to Ramey who pushed it to
the scene. Houtzdale Fire Co. also pushed water from a dump
tank to the scene.
Approximately 75-100
firefighters from Madera Fire Co., Glen Hope Fire Co.,
Irvona Fire Co., Glendale Fire Co. of Coalport, Reade
Township Fire Co. of Blandburg (Cambria County) Glen Richey
Fire Co., Rescue Hose and Ladder Co. of Curwensville, Hope
and Reliance Fire Companies of Philipsburg (Centre County),
Chester Hill Hose Co., Columbia Fire Co. of Osceola Mills,
Houtzdale Fire Co. and Ramey Fire Co.
Madera EMS and QRS were
also on scene. There were no injuries.
The state police fire
marshal has been called to the scene, however, early
indications are that it was electrical in nature.
The building was built
about 1935 and was at first a candy store before being
turned into a restaurant, bar and pizza shop.
Mr. Vancas lost Joey's
Home Plate to a multi-alarm fire in 2000.
